 "I should have got a Weber......" 2009-08-26
By D. Jermain (Kingwood, TX)
My young children "bought" me a grill for Father's Day, 2008. It's a Char-Broil very similar to this one and was a decent grill - for the first 6 mos or so. Although even from the beginning, the hot spots are unacceptable. A difference of 2-3" on the cooktop can mean 2x the cooking time. Once I figured out where the hot spots were and learned to move the food around frequently, the grill was at least usable. Sort of.

So, here we are 14 months later. My grill does sit outdoors, but is covered religiously with an outdoor-specific cover. My cooking grates are rusted to the point of falling apart and the galvanized drip tray under the firebox has rusted so badly, it has broken away and is hanging underneath. I contacted Char-Broil customer support and explained my situation. They claim these grills are designed to last 20-30 years. Yet, when mine rusts to pieces after a year - they refuse to stand behind a obvious product malfunction. Parts to repair my grill is $200 with shipping - nearly 75% of the original purchase price. After pleading my case and arguing with a supervisor, we've reached no resolution. The only explanation I've been offered for the rust is that I "didn't wash the grill down with water frequently enough." Yes, because MORE water is always the solution for rust. What a joke.

So, I'm now rolling my 1 year-old Char-Broil Grill to the curb to be picked up by my friendly garbage collectors. I guess I'll chalk this up as a an expensive learning experience and am writing this review to hopefully save you the same pain.

DO NOT BUY A CHAR BROIL PRODUCT - JUNK!!!

Pro: The grill looks very pretty when first bought

Con: It rusts quickly. It has the hallmarked Char Broil lack of quality. The gas regulator activates too quickly. It never really heats hot. The maximum it gets to even when the gas regulator is working (which isn't too often) is around 450 degrees.

Beware. The warranty does not cover cosmetic flaws to their stainess grills. Even if you use their own products to clean it. Cosmetic stains look horrible.

"pretty outside, but a rust magnet on the inside" 2009-05-06
By John P. (Redmond, WA United States)
Don't let the pretty stainless steel on the outside fool you into thinking these things are weatherproof and long-lasting. The inside of mine (burners and grate) rusted out in a year. The worse thing here is that these parts have a 10 year warranty and Char-broil denied my case. I keep this grill covered and against my house when not in use. Very disappointed all around.

Buy Low Price From Here Now

The Char Broil Quantum M500 IR is so named because it features Char Broil's patented and award winning Quantum Infrared cooking system. The Quantum Infrared cooking system completely eliminates flare up and its design allows for perhaps the greatest grilling versatility seen in years. Each burner has its own temperature gauge located above the control knob and working at grate level for a true reading of the heat about to sear you steak or whatever you may be grilling. The Quantum Infrared design also allows you to add wood chips directly on to the cooking grates for added flavor and no flare up. This three burner grill is highly efficient due to the unique patented infrared grates and thus needs just three burners and 31,000 BTUs to get the job done. Like the standard M500 grill from Char Broil, the Quantum Infrared has 500 sq. in. of primary cooking area, 280 sq. in. of secondary cooking area, new "Surefire" electronic ignition, and a combination of stainless steel and painted steel appliance style cart construction.  "I too am impressed with quantum cooking" 2009-09-11
By Robert A. Gold Jr. (DC Metro)
I'm not sure I buy all the physics they claim is behind this but I do speak highly of the results. I cooked hot dogs, turkey burgers, and bone-in chicken breasts. I was very impressed by the results for all three, especially the chicken. Hot dogs are a no brainer. The turkey burgers were a bit tricky because the soft meat could fall into the grills. The saving factor here is that the grill cooks things very quickly once it's warmed up. The surface of the burger on the bottom cooked before the burgers could really sag much into the grates. What really amazed me was the quality of the chicken breasts. I cooked 5 very different sized breasts at the same time. The outsides on all of them were brown and crispy, the insides were moist and cooked all the way through. I added bbq sauce in the last minutes of cooking. These were the best grilled chicken breasts I've ever cooked. I have no doubt I'll be able to repeat these results for all kinds of meat with a little practice.

One noteworthy item - the booklet in the box doesn't mention this but the website does - season the grates with vegetable oil before cooking for the first time. This will inhibit rusting and should make the meats stick less to the grates. It took me a while to find this tip on the website but make sure you find it and follow the directions, it's a must for these grills.

I give it four stars because the grates/emitters will definitely be harder to clean than a normal open grate. I will likely (I haven't done it yet) just remove the grates and scrape the emitter plates clean with a plastic (when the grill is cold obviously) or metal putty knife. The grates can clean themselves or I can just knock the big chunks off.

I've only had the grill for a couple of days so I can't say how well the materials will hold up over time. Regarding customer service, one of the small bumpers for the lid was broken when I got the grill. I used the website to report the problem and had a response and order for replacement bumpers within 3 hours of my request. Note I had already followed their registration process (easy too).

This Brand is HORRIBLE. I have bought 2 grills from the same company because they are supposingly one of the best. Well just to let you know, Im 2 for 2 on them catching on fire. I have put complaints into customer service and they haven't done anything. They say its user error. Well maybe, but I have a Weber and it doesn't catch on fire. I wouldn't by it.

"Very good grill for the money" 2009-06-21
By David Bigl (Springfield, MA USA)
My girlfriend purchased this grill for me about 3 months ago and I have used it about 30 times mostly for steaks, chicken breasts, and hamburgers. It has decent size cooking area. I can cook 9 huge steaks at the same time. Unless you plan on having a lot of cookouts with more than 20 people there then it is plenty big enough (and even then it is adequate). It is very easy to regulate the temperature of the grill because of the thermometer at the grilling surface so once you find a temperature that cooks the food the way you like it, it is easy to duplicate the desired results with amazing consistency (when i grill steaks i heat up the grill to 650 degrees and throw the steaks on for 7 minutes on each side to get a good sear, then I turn the burners off completely until the temperature drops to 400, then I fire it up and put it on low and close the grill...it gives me a great sear on the outside and is extremely tender on the inside). I haven't had a single flare-up...even on the fattiest piece of meat drenched in olive oil. I only have two small complaints. Cleaning the grill is more difficult than with a conventional grill (but besides scraping off the grates i only clean it once a month so it's not a big deal. That causes it to be less efficient but I'm lazy after eating a big meal so as long as the food comes out ok then I'm happy). The only other complaint I have is that the stainless steel grates do get stained and they aren't very attractive looking after a few uses but I don't really mind that. As long as they're functional I'm happy. Overall I would highly recommend it and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it's difficult to clean.

"After first couple of uses, I am very impressed!" 2009-05-26
By B. Christensen (Santa Barbara, CA United States)
I have always been a wood fire BBQ kind of guy - I like meat cooked over a *real* flame, and even charcoal has always seemed to me like cheating (though I've been using a charcoal Weber kettle for 20 years). I never even considered a gas grill for myself for these reasons.

For my senior Mom & Dad, however, the task of lighting charcoal, etc was too much hassle, so this past weekend I went out shopping for a gas grill for them. After going back and forth between three different home centers and Costco, I settled on this unit as by far the best "bang for the buck" in terms of build quality, performance characteristics, and ease of use for under $500. I seriously considered going up to the Weber Genesis, but for 50% more, I just couldn't quite justify it. My requirement was good quality for under $500.

After about a one-hour erector set project putting it all together (not difficult, just time consuming), I fired it up and let it burn off for about 20 minutes. I was immediately impressed with how hot the cooking surfaces became (and how quickly). The nifty temp sensors at the grate level registered 700+ degrees!

After burn-off, I tried it out with what I have found to be one of the trickiest things to grill over open flame (gas or wood/charcoal): raw marinated chicken parts. To be done right, the chicken has to be crispy on the outside - not burned, and moist and completely cooked on the inside. With unevenly shaped and sized chicken parts, this can be devilishly tricky.

But with this grill, I found I was able to keep the left most burner at full throttle, and the two right burners at low settings and get creative. This allowed me to beautifully sear the skin using the left side of the grill, then finish cooking on the right side (with the BBQ closed). The results were amazing.

One of my favorite things about this grill turned out to be that it is really easy to add wood chips for smoke flavor. Because there is a perforated metal "screen" (the infrared reflector) under the food, it catches the wood chips and holds them at a perfect smoking temperature where they will smolder but not flare up.

Speaking of flare-ups, this grill did NOT exhibit flare-ups at all. Even with fatty pieces of chicken that had been marinated in an olive oil mixture, there was almost no burning or smoking, even on the "searing" side of the hot grill.

When turned down low, I also found the evenness of the heating surface to be impressively consistent, and the large stainless "grill" surface not only made great marks on the food, but also did not stick as badly as most coated steel or iron grill surfaces do.

On the con side, I can imagine that the perforated screen is going to require some periodic maintenance to keep it clean. The good news is that it comes out in three easy-to-handle sections shaped like little trays, each holding a section of grill. You pull the "tray" up and out, then lift the grill surface out of the tray making both very easy to clean.

One final note - I also prepared a boneless leg of lamb on the grill using a "generic" rotisserie (Grill-Pro brand). it *barely* fit between the closed lid and the grill surface, but again, the infrared cooking system worked beautifully. I warmed it up at full throttle for about 5-10 minutes before mounting the marinated lamb roast, then allowed it to sear beautifully for about 15 minutes. Then I turned the burners all down to their lowest settings, threw on a thumb-sized stick of oak from one of our trees, and dropped the lid.

An hour and a half later, we enjoyed one of the best lamb roasts I have ever had!

Highly recommended, especially if you can get it for the price I paid (which was about $[...] less than Amazon's currently listed price)

Pros:

*Great heat output for searing

*Even distribution of heat for predictable results

*Good low-temp performance

*Easy to use wood chips for flavor

*Good build quality in the hood and firebox

Cons:

*Bottom 1/2 of construction is a bit flimsy, but better than many at this price point

*Requires pre-heating for about 10 minutes for best results

*Periodic clean-up probably required for optimum performance

"A Better Way to Cook" 2009-04-26
By L. Rosencrantz (USA)
The big advantages of this grill are even heating and flavor. Even low fat content hamburgers came out juicy and did not shrink. The manufacturer claims that it uses 30% less fuel and it does cook faster than open flame barbeques, but there is a full power 10-15 minute warm up and then another high heat period after you finish to burn off cooking residue so total gas use may actually be more than claimed.

It does not flare up but the screens underneath the grills need to be cleaned or the heat output will drop off. This grill requires more maintenance each time than an open flame unit but it is worth it. Our previous Brinkman BBQ completely rusted out (burners, supports, firebox) after five years but we didn't take very good care of it

A couple of neat features are that you can rotisserie without a special burner, you can add wood chips without a smoker box and there are separate thermometers at grill height for each burner. This latter feature makes temperature control especially easy and accurate at the cooking surface.

All in all very pleased with this grill. Time will tell just how durable it will be, but the screens should protect the firebox and burners better than an open flame BBQ. Burners are lifetime warranty.

 "Over the top" 2009-10-20
By J. Doumani (San Francisco, CA United States)
If you need heat, this thing is borderline too much. Put a pizza stone in and you can cook a proper pizza at 750 degrees. Thick steaks - you had better be ready to turn down the heat. Brown a quail in 2.5 minutes per side - you'll have perfect mahogany color.

For the past 8 years I have been grilling on a broil king and when I decided to replace it, I looked at everything. Barbeques Galore's Turbo models were the only ones that really had me thinking about switching away from Broil King. I didn't want a $4,000 grill. The all stainless Turbo model would run me almost $2,000.00 and I am not sure how much longer it was going to last in reality. So I went back to Broil King and spent $700 and I got another great grill.

Pros:

Hot - you can seriously mess up some meat if you are not careful.

Well built - it is not carved from billet, but it is plenty sturdy.

SS grates - I was always a cast iron grate fan, but I really like the stainless steel cooking surface and I think it will outlast the rest of the grill.

Value - For the quality and the power of this thing, I think it is a great deal.

Controls - The flame controls have a great feel of precision to them without any play.

Replacement parts - everything is replacable and the manufacturer is going to be around to sell you parts.

Con's:

Hot - you can seriously mess up some meat if you are not careful.

Flare-ups - This one seems to flare up more easily than my last one which had different flame shields.

Cast aluminum body - you can overheat this grill and the body of it can deform.

Gas burner for rotisserie - Honestly, I don't know if this is good or bad since I never use the rotisserie, but everyone else uses an infrared burner.

Overall, I like this Broil King even better than my last one and I have never grilled on anything better.

Received the Sovereign 70 grill. Assembly wasn't too bad, took about 45 minutes. It's a very nice grill, made with quality parts. The three burner system is nice to be able to scale you cooking surface to what you need. The middle section seems to burn a little hotter than the two sides. Heat control is very good. I highly recommend this product.

 "Signet 70 - A really usefull Grill." 2009-08-20
By keng70t (Vancouver, WA)
Signet 70

Received Signet 70 BBQ last week, Friday 06-26-09. Unit was delivered assembled and hooked up and Seasoned by the installer. I cooked Hamburgers the first night. Typical Costco Frozen Patties, Some Asparagus and some Zucchini. Wasn't used to the amount of heat the Unit would put out and got the Hamburgers a little crisp. Vegies were fine, cooking on the upper level. Then I read the instructions.

The second weekend I cooked Teriyaki Beef with a receipt handed down to me from my mother. Once again I was trying to guess the heat setting for cooking the meat which was on bamboo skewers. A rotating basis kept meat cooking and being placed on the platter. The only thing I didn't like about that was the mess of the grates it made but they cleaned up much easier than I had expected.

The third weekend I tried the rotisserie and cooked a 5 pound chicken. I used some rub I mixed for Beef with some hot spice in it and the chicken cooked for 100 minutes exactly. After about 5 minutes with the heat setting at MED and the cover closed I noticed that the thermometer said over 600 degrees! I quickly opened the cover and adjusted the control just below medium. The thermometer still showed 400 but it looked like the chicken was cooking just fine. When done the chicken was beyond my wildest imagination. The meat just fell off the bone and was exceedingly moist. I've been learning to adjust the heat for proper cooking and have found that I use LOW a lot.

Since then i've cooked Smoked Baby Back Ribs, Smoked Chicken Breast, Scalops, Shrimp and Lots of different Veggies. I really don't know how I managed with my last Grill.

For someone that wants' a very versatile Grill for a reasonable price, you can't beat the Signet 70.

 "Weber is Tops" 2007-05-21
By A. Cerqua (Monroe, VA USA)
I've never met a Weber grill owner who didn't remain completely loyal to the brand. Weber customers will never buy anything else. I can't speak to their less expensive lines (some are made in China), but the premium lines are first rate made in the US of A and the EP-310 is a great example. This is a grill which I own and it will last for many, many years. This unit is made of 302 stainless steel, the GOOD kind, not the inferior 420 stuff most of the grills at Lowes are made with. Some parts are cast alumnium and a few cabinet parts are painted metal but nothing that will rust. Without going on feature by feature, this grill was designed to cook well and very efficiently and last a long time to boot. The thick stainless steel cooking grates are key. Anything else (cast iron, porcelinized iron etc) will rust away too soon and they are not cheap to replace. These will last virtually a lifetime. Many cool looking grills you see are affordable because they chince on the grates. You get a grill for $200 and a year later you are buying grates for $100. Take my word for it...buy a Weber grill. This model is a top shelf choice. The Genesis S-310 is the same but the cover is stainless and it costs $100 more. I find stainless too hard to keep nice looking. The black porcelin cover is easy to keep clean. Oh, and there is a sister model to the EP-310...the EP320. It is the same but has a side burnr. Happy grilling!

 "Junk" 2009-09-19
By Danny L. Mccaffree
This fryer is junk, to begin with it was short parts and the pans were bent because of shabby packageing and cheap box. When cooking with it you have to keep adjusting the heat as it won't hold an even tempature, one pan will get hot and the other too cold, you adjust it and it goes the other way, one reason for this is the paper thin pans that won't hold any heat. The directions for assembly are very scant. Again this fryer is junk, I will not recommend to anyone.

 "A great addition" 2009-11-11
By Toluallii F. Nielsen (Ventura, CA)
Man is this a great addition to my Char-Griller. I mainly use it as a charcoal starter with my chimney and it gets that job done very well. My only complaint is that the paint around the burner area is starting to chip off. Nothing a little prep work and high heat paint won't solve; however, it shouldn't really be necessary within the first 3 months of purchase. That's the only reason for 4 stars, otherwise it works great.

 "SHIPPING SCREWUP" 2007-09-09
By Rikdapik (LA)
My first bad experience with Amazon. 3 times they sent me previously opened packages that were clearly beat up in shipping. The first time I opened the carton and found alot of sheetmetal damage, so returned the grill. The next two times the packaging was clearly incorrect and damaged so the shipments were refused. Shame on you Amazon for sending out junk, not once but time after time. Still hoping to get an undamaged grill! Minden Grill rated one star because being so fragile it clearly needs better packaging.

"A fine grill and a fine value." 2007-06-14
By Eric D. Stoloff
This Minden Grill Company 30,000 BTU Master Grill has been working perfectly for me since day one.

I received the grill in after just a couple of days (with free shipping and no sales taxes). I spent about 3o minutes assembling it without the instructions (I was hungry and it looked simple). The grill looked great. The only problem was that I assembled one piece backwards so the hose would not connect properly. I had to rewind what I did and assembled it correctly (so follow those simple directions). Soon there after the Tuna steaks were cooking.

This quality grill has worked perfectly from then on out. It fires right up with the presto igniter. You can control three internal burners quickly get the temperature to the optimum temperature (temperature gauge works fine).

The grill is the right size for most families or get together, looks great (we went with the forest green) and is simple to work with.

I realize after it arrived that I had better then expected grill for the long haul so I came back to the site and upgraded to the bamboo cutting board (heck only $14), the side burner and a cover to keep this master grill looking good.

This grill is a solid value and I highly recommend it.
